Opelousas little theatre7/28/2023 ![]() ![]() People in the community, especially children, create these dolls to donate to The Wishing Doll Project which in turn places these dolls up for adoption.Īdoptions are made via Donations and they are fully funding outdoor reading gardens for local Elementary schools in Eunice. Wishing Dolls are works of Art that are created by items found in nature and donated materials. The Wishing Doll Project will be having a Wishing Doll making session on April 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. Information: Felicia Wiggins at 33 or Jerica Guillory at 33. The event is free and the public is invited. They will also perform at Festival International of Lafayette, at Lafayette Public Libraries and at the Horse Farm Market in Lafayette Central Park. They practice exclusively French songs in various styles. ![]() The Choir coaches (Sabrina Benazzouz, Jean-Philippe Warlet and Sophie Zaoui) are from Belgium and France. Members are second, third, and fourth-graders of Prairie Elementary Lafayette French Immersion Program. The choir will also perform at the Jean Lafitte Prairie Acadian Cultural Center. at the Chapelle Country Store at Le Village, 121 Seale Lane in Eunice, in conjunction with the free children’s game day and Wishing Doll Session. The Opelousas Little Theatre will present the witty and humorous show “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”. The OLT takes pride in its long history of providing some of the best of Broadway-style productions in South Louisiana.Opelousas Little Theatre “The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee” Latest improvements include new curtains, a lighting board, a sound system, new carpet and a concession area. The re-energized members began an aggressive fund-raising campaign to restore and renovate the old church into today's OLT playhouse. However, in 1984, the OLT began staging plays again. ![]() The group continued to exist but shows were put on hold. The old church was then moved to South City Park, where it stands today. In that year, the OLT raised funds and purchased the old Episcopal Church of the Epiphany (built in 1880).The old church was being torn down to build a larger church building. It was not until 1959 that the group found a permanent home. Other performance locations were the auditoriums at Market Street Elementary School, Opelousas Senior High School and the St. Consequently, the OLT temporarily disbanded and reorganized in 1946.ĭuring these early years, members used the old Academy of the Immaculate Conception Auditorium (today, Opelousas Catholic School) to perform. However, when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941, many members of the small group left home to serve their country in the war. The OLT staged its first play, The Adorable Spendthrift, in December 1940. It is one of the oldest community theaters in Louisiana. In fact, the Sandoz Opera House, which was one of the few opera houses outside of New Orleans, flourished here in the 1800s.In 1939, the Opelousas Little Theatre (OLT) was formed. Opelousas has been a center of business, government and culture for hundreds of years in south Louisiana. The public is encouraged to contact OLT for more information. The OLT Board meets the last Monday of each month (except December) at 6:00 p.m. Members of the OLT Executive Committee and the OLT Board of Directors are responsible for the day-to-day operations and physical maintenance of the theater as well as approving, planning and producing the season's selections at OLT. The Opelousas Little Theatre governing body is comprised of area citizens who are committed to the performing arts in Louisiana. ![]()
